Basic Information On How To Be a Chef

I am a first year student taking up a bachelor of professional studies in culinary arts at a culinary arts school attached to a college in the east coast of the United States. Since I was child, I have always been involved in cooking by helping my mother. She was involved in cooking pastries and other delicacies as her hobby until she offered and sold them to parties and other events in our community as way to earn extra income. So now, I am following my dream of becoming a professional chef by taking a formal course in the culinary arts.

However, there are several approaches on how to become a chef so that I am sharing with you the general information that I learned about the several ways or approaches on how to be chef. The general guidelines:

Get a formal education or training – A formal education is usually the first step and the most important because many restaurants, hotels, resorts, cruise ships and other organisations or institutions that employ professional chefs require that entry level positions for chefs should have a bachelor's degree or associate degree in culinary art, baking and cooking, and other courses related to the culinary arts. If you are planning to study in a culinary school, make sure that the school and its academic programmes are accredited by a recognised accreditation organisation since. Many employers would require the prospective chefs to have completed accreditation academic programmes.

Obtain extensive hands on training – You should study in a culinary school that offers academic programmes that include extensive on the job training in actual work settings. When you complete your course or degree from a culinary school, you should obtain further training and experience by applying for apprenticeships or internships in organisation or institutions.

Select the specific type of chef position – There are several types or titles for chefs working in a professional kitchen or work setting. The titles include executive chef or head chef, sous-chef, expediter, chef de partie or also known as station chef or line cook, commis, and kitchen assistant. Take note that each of those titles would require you to have relevant training and experience for each title.

Importance of Easy and Healthy Recipes for University Students

It's bad enough that university or college life could be stressful and full of pressures due to the large amount of academic tasks that you have to do, but it is aggravated by the fast food and other junk foods that you have to eat because you don't have enough time to prepare and cook healthy meals. I should know because I used to be like that. But now, thanks to the advice from my parents and from the information I got from reading various books and other reading materials about easy to cook recipe methods of healthy meals, I have healthy eating habits. I also noticed that I am more focused in the way I study and learn due to the healthy meals that I eat, which I prepare and cook myself.

Since most students are busy with their academic tasks, preparing and cooking a meal that is easy and healthy is essential. I have learned that pasta meals are main course meals that are not just easy to prepare and cook, but they could give you a feeling of fullness so that you really feel satisfied after eating a pasta meal.

An example of an easy to cook and healthy pasta dish is pasta with tuna that only takes at least 20 minutes to prepare and cook. For the ingredients, you would need: four ounces of long pasta; one tablespoon of olive oil; one chopped garlic clove; a small can of  flaked tuna, drained; two tablespoons of dried parsley; one tablespoon of tomato sauce; four flour ounces of chicken stock; and salt and black pepper.

1. Heat the oil in a pan, add the chopped garlic, fry for two minutes until it is soft. Add the tuna, tomato sauce, chicken stock, salt and pepper, and simmer for two minutes.

2. Boil salted water in a large pan, add the pasta, and cook for 10 to 12 minutes until the pasta is tender.

3. When the pasta is tender, placed it in a colander and drain it well. Then, put the pasta in a large place, add the tuna mixture and mix it well. Now, it is ready to serve and eat.

Cooking Tips: Measuring Ingredients

Being able to measure accurately is considered as the most important skill in cooking. Housewives, cooking enthusiasts and chefs who are in training allot many hours to testing recipes with varying measurements through the tolerance testing process. The goal is for the recipe to still taste good even though the amount of ingredients are varied; if a particular recipe fails this test, it is not published or released for mass consumption. However, even if the recipes you would find in cookbooks and websites are able to tolerate variations in the measuring of ingredients, the cook will still have to follow the basic rules of measuring.

Make sure you have actual commercial measuring utensils. For dry ingredients, use graduated or nested measuring cups and measuring spoons. For liquid ingredients, a clear glass or plastic cup with a pouring spout is most ideal. Here are some tips for measuring common ingredients:

· Flour, Baking Power or Baking Soda. Use a large spoon to lightly spoon flour from its container into the measuring cup. Refrain from shaking the cup and packing the flour. With the use of the back of a knife or flat blade spatula, level the flour with the top edge of the measuring cup. Do not use the measuring cup itself to scoop the flour out of the container as you may end up with way, way more of the correct measurement.
· Sugar. Use a cup or measuring spoon to scoop it out of the container or bag until it is overflowing. Then, level this off with the back of a knife.

Who are Better in Cooking, Men or Women?

The activity of cooking has been associated with women since time immemorial. Even in the modern times when men have excelled and become well known in the culinary arts, the task of cooking is still attributed to women. And because men have become outstanding in this area which is identified with women, a debate on which gender is better has emerged.

* Women – As mentioned, the task of cooking have been identified with the female gender since the prehistoric times. We can support that women are better in cooking because it is a feminine activity as it involved in taking care of the family and the nutrition and health of the society in general. Women are more caring and thoughtful than men, generally, and these two attributes are necessary in cooking or the culinary arts. This is because cooking is a delicate task; a speck of carelessness can alter the recipe and destroy the intended taste of the dish. Women are very careful because they care enough to go the extra mile in serving the best possible meal. And talking about service, it is the female gender which is tasked to serve the family which includes the male husband. And thus, the husband does not cook and is not associated with cooking.

* Men – Arriving at the part where we discuss male species, as mentioned, husbands are served in the family. The male gender is not known for its cooking or culinary prowess. However, recently and even in older times, there have been many outstanding male cooks and chefs. In fact, chefs are given the impression of being men. This is because first well known and outstanding chefs are men. Men are known for being skillful in mastering what they do, and this includes cooking. As cooking or culinary arts have become a set of skills or a structured profession of practice, male have become dominant in this field because professional career areas and excellence in them are attributed to men. Men are very good at learning and mastering skills and cooking has become a set of skills.

The cooking profession is the domain of women and it has also been dominated by men. The debate of who is better cannot be settled because it is not a question of gender, but rather, an issue of skills and character.

The Culinary Schoolhouse: Be Guided!

If you 're concerned in following a calling in the cuisine, at some time you'll without doubt be confronted by the decision of whether or not to go to culinary martial arts school.
Much of old-school chefs will claim that real-life restaurant experience is to a greater extent worthful than everything else you can acquire in a schoolroom. And industry experience is crucial. But more than so quite a few of tonight's most prosperous chefs keeping culinary levels, a practice of winner begins to emerge.

The bottom line is, increasingly of the best chefs in the highest regarded kitchens are culinary schoolhouse alums and they 're the ones doing the hiring! So immediately's a honorable risk they'll be look that "educational activity" line on your re start to see if you fail to 've got a cuisine level.

Erst you 've made up one's mind your culinary school is right for you, the enquiry gets which ever culinary schooling? Hither are five affairs to seek out when taking a culinary schoolhouse :

1. ACF Accreditation
The American Culinary Federation (ACF) is the top professional chefs' organization in North America and is the organization responsible for regulatory oversight of culinary schools.
2. Cost
3. Age of School
The popularity of cooking reality shows such as "Top Chef" has led to increased interest in culinary schools. To meet this increased demand, more privately operated culinary schools come into existence. But newer schools aren't necessarily better. For one thing, ACF accreditation doesn't come overnight. It takes a consistent track record of excellence to receive the ACF's seal of approval, and many newer schools just aren't there yet.
4. Modern Facilities
The flip side of the age of the school is the state of its facilities. Community colleges may have been around longer, but their budgets may also be relatively small. That makes it tougher for them to purchase new equipment or outfit modern classrooms and kitchens. On the other hand, the newer schools with the higher tuitions often boast newly constructed, state-of-the art facilities.
Then again, not every restaurant out there is going to have state-of-the-art facilities, so taking classes in the comfort of a shiny new high-tech kitchen may not adequately prepare students for the gritty realities of the culinary industry.
5. Hands-On Instruction
A good culinary program should have some sort of student-operated restaurant that allows them to get a sense of real-world restaurant service — and in fact, most of them do.
Of course, there's no substitute for real restaurant experience. Some programs encourage or even require some sort of internship or "externship" whereby students earn course credit through work in a local restaurant.
